Understanding Insurance Policies

What Are Auto Insurance Endorsements?

When purchasing an insurance policy for your car, you can choose from a variety of different types of coverages, including comprehensive and collision. Additionally, you might be able to add extra types of coverages to your policy, and these are referred to as auto insurance endorsements. Understanding what these are and the types you can choose will help you obtain the right coverages on your auto insurance policy.

What is an endorsement?

With any type of insurance, you might have endorsements, which are add-ons to a policy. When you buy a policy for your car, you can choose from a variety of different types of basic coverage. If you have a loan, though, you will probably not get to choose what coverage types you have, as your lender will have control over this. If you do not have a loan, you can choose your coverage types. If there are special types of coverages you would like to add that are above and beyond the basic types, they are called endorsements.

What types of endorsements can you choose?

In terms of auto insurance, there are numerous types of endorsements you can add to your policy, and here are some of the most common ones:

  • Roadside assistance – Roadside assistance is not a basic type of coverage that you will have, but it is something you can add on to your policy. This coverage protects you when you experience car problems, even if the problems are issues you caused, such as locking your keys in your car.
  • Gap coverage – Gap coverage is another type of endorsement designed to protect you from owing a deficit on your car if your car is totaled from an accident.
  • Glass coverage – You can also purchase glass coverage as an endorsement to cover times when a window in your car shatters.
  • Rental car – You can also purchase an endorsement that provides you with compensation if you ever need to rent a car after an accident occurs.

As you can see, there are different types of endorsements you can choose from, and you are free to choose as many as you would like. Each one will cost an extra fee, though.

Talking to an insurance agent about your unique situation, needs, and concerns can help you choose the right policy for your needs. Talk to an insurance agent today if you would like to learn more about coverage options for auto insurance.
